We had a great day yesterday. We got up early to get on a boat to go to the island of Rosario. We rode on a boat for about an hour to an island where we went snorkeling, laid by the beach, and got attacked by the people selling bracelets, necklaces, and whatever else you could think of. The snorkeling was awesome! I have been snorkeling in Hawaii but this we better I think. The water was so clear and the fish we saw were so bright and beautiful. It was really shallow so you could see everything. We all loved it. We go to the island and right when we got off the boat, there were people attacking us trying to have us by their prizes. There were about 4 or 5 guys with buckets of oysters trying to get us to eat them. Austin thought they were like a welcome gift so he gave one a try...and then another and another. He ended up eating 6 of them and then of course the guy wanted money. We didn't know what he was saying to us so we just walked away. He came and found us and wanted his money! We gave it to him and got a lecture from Griff that do not accept anything even if they put it in your hands. There were people selling everything from bracelets, and necklaces, to boat rides and massages. Crazy.
We got back from the island and headed to Santa Marta. The taxi we took was a little car and we had 4 big bags plus 4 of us. It was pretty tight to say the least. And the worst part was that it took 4 hours to get there. Oh man, it was a late night. We got to our hotel and it was not what we were expecting. It isn't bad, just not what we are used to sleeping in. The beds are sooo hard, the shower is cold, bugs crawling around, and no blankets-just sheets. Griff said it is exactly what he had in the mission. I am glad we experienced it one night...but will be glad when we have a real bed to sleep in.
I am learning a lot and loving being here. I think the most important thing I am learning though is how blessed we are to be able to live in America. We have such a great life and are so fortunate to even have a bed to sleep in and a real job to make money. Also we are so blessed to have temples so close to us. People here have to travel 14 hours to go to temples. One family that was in Griffin's area told us their story of how they had to travel 4 days to get to a temple so they could be married in the temple. Their daughter was born after they were sealed and they were just so happy that she could be born into the covenant. They only get to go to the temple once a year, and their recent trip they met a returned missionary that wanted to get married. Even though their daughter is only 16, they already have plans that the returned missionary will marry their daughter. Being here is an amazing experience that I am so glad that I get to go through.
